Microsoft has entered into a landmark agreement with Constellation Energy to restart a nuclear reactor at the historic Three Mile Island site, with plans to have the reactor operational by 2028. This initiative marks the first time a nuclear plant in the United States will be restarted to supply power exclusively to a single customer, in this case, Microsoft.
Three Mile Island was the location of the most serious nuclear incident in U.S. history in 1979, involving a partial meltdown and radiation leak. One of the reactors has remained in cold shutdown since the disaster, while the other continued to operate until it was decommissioned in 2019 due to financial difficulties.
Given the site's history, concerns about safety and public perception are inevitable, making this a highly scrutinized project in the energy and technology sectors.
